TIMES AUSTRALIA, SUMBA – The traditional houses of Sumba stand not just as architectural wonders but as symbolic embodiments of unity and heritage. These elevated wooden structures, soaring up to 10-30 meters high with thatched roofs, aren't merely shelters but hold profound cultural and social significance for the Sumbanese people.

In these communities, the arrangement of these houses isn't coincidental. It forms two parallel rows, resembling a boat, with megalithic tombstones in the center. Umbu Yudi Rawambaku, a cultural observer, emphasizes this layout signifies unity within the village, where every aspect, space, and form bear ritual, social, symbolic, and economic meanings.

The lower section, reflecting economic life, serves as a space for livestock and weaving. Meanwhile, the "Bangga" section serves as the communal deliberation area, while the main living space within the extended family includes a central cooking area.

The pinnacle of these houses houses sacred items, an elevated space reserved for revered objects and rituals. Intriguingly, these traditional houses follow a unique social order - not all family members have equal access to every room, indicating differing roles and responsibilities based on gender.

Umbu Lapu, a cultural figure, underscores the distinct entrances and exits in these houses, symbolizing the varying roles and responsibilities between men and women within the household, rooted in Sumba's philosophy.

"Well, the entrance between man and woman was separated as their differ role and responsibility in the house," the guy explained.

Moreover, the Sumbanese predominantly follow Marapu beliefs, venerating ancestral spirits. Within their language, Marapu signifies these ancestral spirits, believed to observe and influence the living, warranting special treatment and respect, especially when housed in the tower of the traditional Sumba homes.

Beyond their architectural splendor, these houses embody a profound cultural tapestry, encapsulating tradition, spirituality, and societal norms, fostering unity and preserving the rich heritage of the Sumba people. (*)
