TIMES AUSTRALIA, JAKARTA – Following a recent wildfire, the iconic Savannah of Bromo Mountain has not only recovered but has also witnessed the resurgence of its unique flora, including the enchanting orchids.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) extends an invitation to visitors, urging them to participate in the preservation of this revitalized environment.

Rebirth of Orchids

Among the flourishing orchids is the remarkable Habenaria multipartita Bl.Ex Kraenzl. This orchid, reaching a height of 60 cm, stands as a testament to the resilient ecosystem of Bromo Mountain.

Classified as a terrestrial bulbous orchid, it is part of the exclusive group of Javan endemic orchids found in the savannas and open forests of the mountains.

Distinguishing features of this orchid include its wide-open sepals and numerous trailing tendrils, setting it apart from its counterparts like the Habenaria tosariensis.

With green-hued sepals and petals, accompanied by pale yellow lips and tendrillike side lobes, this orchid presents a unique and captivating appearance.

Another orchid reclaiming its place in this rejuvenated ecosystem is the Anggrek Microtis unifolia. Characterized by a single leaf resembling chives or a tube, this orchid, with its small ear-like flowers, adds a touch of elegance to Bromo Mountain's landscape.

Ecological Significance

Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of Administration at BB TNBTS, emphasizes the ecological importance of these orchids. Not merely decorative elements, orchids play a crucial role in the ecosystem.

"Beyond their aesthetic appeal, orchid flowers produce nectar, serving as a vital food source for a variety of insects," she said(8/11/2023).

The ecological contributions of orchids extend to their role in regulating forest floor humidity, providing sustenance to primates through their bulbs or tubers, and creating nesting sites for birds.

In light of this newfound vibrancy, BB TNBTS calls upon visitors to embrace responsible tourism. The conservation of Bromo Mountain's diverse biodiversity hinges on the collective efforts of mindful and intelligent visitors.

The organization encourages all to become stewards of this rejuvenated ecosystem, ensuring its continued vitality for generations to come.
The story of Bromo Mountain's post-fire rejuvenation is not only one of resilience but also of the interconnectedness of nature.

As orchids once again grace the savannas and open forests, they stand as a symbol of the enduring spirit of the ecosystem. Visitors are not only witnesses to this transformation but are also invited to be active participants in the ongoing conservation journey of Bromo Mountain.
